FACTS ABOUT HOMELESS

Homelessness in Western Australia is a complex issue with various contributing factors. Here are some key facts:
  • Significant Numbers: On any given night, thousands of people in WA experience homelessness. The 2021 ABS Census estimated around 9,700 people were homeless, with over 2,300 sleeping rough.
  • Rising Trend: There has been a steady increase in people accessing specialist homelessness services in WA.
  • Regional Disparity: Homelessness rates are higher in regional WA than in the city, despite a larger concentration of support services in urban areas.
  • Overrepresentation of First Nations People: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are significantly overrepresented in the homeless population, comprising a much larger proportion than their representation in the general population.
  • Diverse Experiences: Homelessness can take many forms, including sleeping rough, staying in temporary accommodation, couch surfing, and living in severely overcrowded dwellings.
  • Contributing Factors: Factors contributing to homelessness include high housing costs, relationship breakdowns, financial difficulties, and systemic issues like intergenerational trauma and social exclusion.

It’s important to remember that these are just statistics. Behind each number is a person with a unique story and set of challenges. Addressing homelessness requires a multifaceted approach that tackles the root causes and provides support for those affected.
